New York Cosmos Building Practice Facility

Cynthia Marie Tuesday, April 10, 2012

The return of the New York Cosmos to the North American Soccer League this summer has set in motion plans to build a practice facility. Near to its first home, Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium, a $400,000 practice facility is being built at Mitchel Field.

Renovation plans have been in motion since July on the training complex. It will be open to the public, except for during soccer season and the team is expected to sign a 10-year lease with the county. Erik Stover, Chief Operating Officer for the Cosmos, said, “This field’s obviously in complete disrepair, it’s not really being used at all so we think it’s a very clear win-win for the citizens here and for our organization. We’re going to be renovating it at our cost, [while] not asking for any taxpayer money and there will be some permitted use for citizens.”

The Cosmos began playing in 1971 and won five Soccer Bowls. The team and the league were dissolved in the early 1980’s. Cosmos Chairman Seamus O’Brien said of the restoration that it “is going to benefit the Long Island community tremendously.”

The plans have been well received by the community, but there is a lot of work to be done before their first match at Hofstra on August 3rd to get the team ready and the practice complex ready.
