Long Island Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with Parades and Food

Wendy L Wednesday, March 14, 2012

It doesn't matter what part of Long Island you are at because there will be numerous parades, activities and great eats throughout the Island to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

Get your green attire out to join in the festivities the entire week!

  • Long Island Children’s Museum will have special activities celebrating all things Irish over the weekend. Children age 3 and up can explore traditional Irish music with Darlene Graham and the Shades of Green Band. The program starts at 2pm on Saturday, March 17, and Sunday, March 18. There is a $4 fee ($3 for LICM members) with museum admission. While there, also enjoy its latest exhibit called Feasts for Beasts. The exhibit features live animals, feeding sessions and the opportunity to learn and explore what certain animals eat and how physical characteristics help each animal to eat. (See a list of Long Island Museums)

  • The Patchogue Fire Department Euclid Hose Company will host a St. Patrick’s Day Dinner/Dance at 7pm on Saturday, March 17. Come support the local fire department and enjoy a traditional Irish meal while you’re at it. Dinner will feature corned beef and cabbage, dessert, unlimited beer, wine, soda, and there will be music, dancing and raffle fun. Tickets are $35/person and may be purchased in advance or at the door at Patchogue Fire Department, located at 15 Jennings Avenue.

  • The 50th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Montauk will take place at 10am on Sunday, March 25 with the starting point being Edgemere Road. It is the second largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York. Join the festive celebration. The Montauk Chamber of Commerce will also serve hot clam chowder made and donated by local restaurants in a souvenir mug. There will also be a luncheon and a cocktail party the days leading up to this parade. (see all Chambers of Commerce)
  • Join the Grand Marshal’s Luncheon from noon to 3pm on Friday, March 23, at Gurney’s Inn. There will be a full course meal for $40/person. The Grand Marshal for the parade, Mickey Valcich, will also be presented with the parade sash, top hat and shillelagh (Irish walking stick) at the luncheon.

  • The Gala Cocktail Party will take place from 4 to 8pm on Saturday, March 24, at Gurney’s Inn. It will feature a buffet, open bar and live band – The 3 B’s. Tickets are $60/person and go towards fundraising for the Montauk Friends of Erin St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Visit the website for ticket purchase information.
