‘Best in Show’ Winner Announced
JOY: A Now-International Juried Art Competition & Show
Presented by East End Arts
Show Dates: August 31 – October 5, 2012
(RIVERHEAD, NY, July 26, 2012) –– The East End Arts Gallery is thrilled to announce the winner of Joy, the national juried art show-gone-international. Guest jurors Peter J. Marcelle, Director of the Gerald Peters Gallery in New York City, and Owner of the Peter Marcelle Gallery in Bridgehampton, NY; and Bruce Helander, renowned critic, internationally-known artist and author, White House Fellow for the National Endowment for the Arts, and Editor-in-Chief of Arts Economist Magazine, selected fifty works from nearly 300 two-dimensional entries, with artists from as far away as Korea entering their artwork into this juried competition and show. Of these fifty, only one was selected as ‘Best in Show’: Long Islandartist Elizabeth Malonuwicz for her oil painting entitled Morning Light. The winning artist, who describes herself as a classical realist, will receive a 10-day stay in East End Arts’ Artist Residence, which she intends to use to study fine art printing on our professional printing press, plus $1,000 cash, and inclusion in a group show at the prestigious Peter Marcelle Gallery in Bridgehampton, NY. Additional prizes were awarded to three outstanding works, including: First Place, which went to Anne Seelbach from Sag Harbor, NY for her work in acrylic on canvas entitled Iris; Second Place, which went to Neva Setlow of East Quogue, NY for her work entitled gard; and Third Place, which went to RJT Haynes from East Hampton, NY for his work in oil entitled Fresh Start. ‘Best in Show’ winner Long Island artist Elizabeth Malunowicz works in the tradition of classical realism. Her education and training was at select private academies including the Long Island Academy of Fine Art and the Stevenson Academy. She believes a painting, be it a still life, portrait or landscape has subconscious power that can represent a range of ideas, emotions and contemplations. Elizabeth's award-winning work has been widely exhibited in many juried shows throughout Long Island, including the Islip Museum of Art and the Lyceum Gallery at Suffolk County Community College in Riverhead. Her work has also been permanently installed in the Ed and Phyllis Davis Wellness Institute at Southampton Hospital. Liz is also exhibiting her work at the Rosalie Dimon Gallery at the Jamesport Manor Inn in Jamesport, New York in a two-artist show from August through October 2012. Elizabeth resides and works in Eastport, New York.
The 50 works selected for the Joy show will be on display from August 31 through October 5, 2012 at the East End Arts’ Gallery, located at 133 East Main Street in Riverhead, NY. Joy will open with a reception on Friday, August 31, from 5 PM to 7 PM. This free event is open to the public; refreshments will be served. This is the first national (gone-international) show that East End Arts has presented since opening its doors 40 years ago.
East End Arts Executive Director Pat Snyder notes: “We are happy to be providing artists, both local and nationally, not only the opportunity to exhibit in a nationally recognized show with judges of formidable stature, but also the chance for the winner to be included in a future significant gallery exhibit.”
