Wendy L Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Don't put away your New Year's party gear just yet! Long Island will be celebrating New Year's once again come Jan. 23rd – for Chinese New Year. This year is the mark of the Dragon, often symbolic to the Chinese as a noble and superior creature with power and good fortune. Celebrations run for approximately two weeks, which means Long Island will have plenty of activities to entertain all.

For the upcoming weekends, don't miss out on these Chinese New Year celebration activities:

Sunday, Jan. 22: Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum in Cold Spring Harbor will host a session to celebrate Chinese New Year at 2 pm. Learn about the traditions of Chinese New Year and how certain objects and gestures are symbolic of good luck. There will also be an opportunity to practice Chinese calligraphy and learn how to write "whale" in Chinese. This session is suitable for those ages 5 and up. RSVP is required at 631-367-3418. Charges include $4, or free with your membership or paid admission ($6 for adults; $5 for seniors and students, age 5 to 18) to the museum.

Sunday, Jan. 29:Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Educational and Cultural Center will host Chinese New Year celebration activities at the Stony Brook Village Center in Stony Brook. From 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm, come by to enjoy festivities including drumming, dancing performances and a lion dance performed by Ten Tigers Kung Fu Academy. Advance reservations are required at 631-689-5888. Charges include $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and children under 12. Children’s admission includes Year of the Dragon craft activity.

For some real Chinese dining experience, make a visit to any one of these locations:

  • Fortune Wheel Seafood Restaurant (516-579-4700) at 3601 Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown serves up fresh Chinese food. Traditional dim sum carted around the restaurant may be experienced here. This is also the place to try out traditional Chinese seafood dishes.
