United States Army Veteran to Receive Service Dog from Save-A-Pet and Guardians of Rescue

Who: Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc. and Guardians of Rescue

What: U.S. Army Veteran James Mowdy of Boone, North Carolina will receive a service dog, courtesy of Guardians of Rescue’s “Paws of War” Program and Save-A-Pet. After serving a tour in Iraq as a Radio Telephone Operator (RTO) for a long-range surveillance team, Mr. Mowdy has suffered from symptoms associated with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) for more than 10 years. He reached out to Guardians of Rescue to assist with finding a canine companion that may help ease some of his anxiety and trauma.

Mr. Mowdy had requested a Cane Corso, and after an exhaustive search for the proper fit, Guardians of Rescue and Save-A-Pet were able to locate “Grazi,” a two-year-old, female Cane Corso with the right temperament and qualities to be a perfect service companion for Mr. Mowdy.

Volunteer trainers from All Star Dog Training and Pet Peeves Dog Training of Long Island donated their time, while funds were raised via Facebook to fly Mr. Mowdy from North Carolina to Save-A-Pet for what is sure to be an emotional first meeting with Grazi.

Availability: U.S. Army Veteran James Mowdy, Save-A-Pet Founder/President and Guardians of Rescue VP Dori Scofield, and Guardians of Rescue President Robert Misseri will be on hand to discuss the search for Grazi and how the companionship and comfort of service dogs can help soldiers and veterans deal with and overcome PTSD and other traumas associated with war.

Directions: Long Island Expressway to Exit 64 North (Rte. 112) towards Port Jefferson Station. Continue for approximately eight miles. Save-A-Pet is on the left-hand side.
