The Salem Witch Trials Come To Life On Stage In Arthur Miller's The Crucible November 6-24

John Mitty Sunday, October 28, 2012

October 28, 2012 (Sag Harbor, NY) - Bay Street Theatre’s Literature Live! presentation of THE CRUCIBLE, by Arthur Miller, will be presented live on stage in a professional production November 6-24. The play will be directed by Murphy Davis, Artistic Director of Bay Street Theatre. Weekday performances are for local and regional schools, groups and the general public. Additional public performances will be presented Fridays and Saturdays on November 9, 10, 16, 17, 23 and 24 at 7 pm; with a JUST ADDED matinee on Sunday, November 11 at 2 pm and another matinee on Saturday, November 24 at 2 pm. Suggested for ages 13 and up. The program is sponsored in part by Devlin McNiff Halstead Property and the Town of Southampton.

“Each year we choose a piece of literature from the core curriculum and bring it to life on stage,” says Murphy Davis. “It is also a terrific way for the public in general to reacquaint themselves with a great American play.” We keep the prices at $10 for students and teachers so that it is affordable for schools and offers students the opportunity to experience the impact of live theatre.” The adult tickets are $20.

In 1952, Arthur Miller wrote THE CRUCIBLE, a play about the Salem witch trials that took place in the Province of Massachusetts Bay between 1692-1693. The play was written as an allegory of McCarthyism, when the U.S. government blacklisted accused communists. It was first performed at the Martin Beck Theater on Broadway in 1953, and went on to win the Tony for “Best Play” that year.

The cast includes Ken Forman (Reverend Samual Parris), Joanna Howard (Abigail Williams), Kate Mueth (Mrs. Ann Putnam), Al Bundonis (Thomas Putnam) Mackenzie Engeldrum (Mercy Lewis), Kate O’Phalen (Mary Warren), Rob DiSario (John Proctor), Lisa Cory (Rebecca Nurse), Peter Connolly (Reverend John Hale), Chloe Dirksen (Elizabeth Proctor) and Joel Leffert (Deputy Governor Danforth)

“We’re thrilled about this year’s production,” says Tracy Mitchell, Executive Director. “We thank our sponsors and donors who help make this production a reality each year, though, we still need to raise $9,500 to cover the cost of this year’s production.” Donations can be made online at www.baystreet.org or by calling Jessica Lemire in the Administrative office at 631-725-0818.

Literature Live! is a BOCES-approved Arts-in-Education program. Plays chosen are from standards-based literature and are supported with teacher-developed lesson plans and reference materials. All performances are 90 minutes and weekday shows are followed by a question and answer session.
