New York Breast Reconstruction Alliance Joins American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Recording Artist Jewel to Close Loop on Breast Cancer

Great Neck, NY, Plastic Surgery Practice Sponsors Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day USA to Raise Awareness about Reconstruction Options Post-Mastectomy

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (August 15, 2012) – Today, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and The Plastic Surgery Foundation (The PSF) announced their partnership with New York Breast Reconstruction Alliance (nyBRA) in support of the first national Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day USA, October 17, 2012.  As a sponsor, nyBRA joins the world’s largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons, and BRA Day national spokesperson Jewel, in the campaign to support breast cancer survivors’ right to be informed and choose whether breast reconstruction following mastectomy is right for them.

To combat research showing 7 out of 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer are not informed of their reconstructive options, the U.S. and 20 other countries will join together for BRA Day on October 17.  BRA Day USA is an initiative designed to promote education, awareness and access regarding breast reconstruction following breast cancer surgery. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the ASPS and The PSF.

Founded by plastic surgeons at Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, P.C., in Long Island, nyBRA is an initiative dedicated to improving both quality of life and outcomes for women undergoing breast reconstruction.

“We are thrilled to have nyBRA as a sponsor of BRA Day USA,” said ASPS President Malcolm Z. Roth, MD.  “This exceptional team of surgeons exemplifies the commitment of all board-certified plastic surgeons to improving the lives of breast cancer patients, through their advanced surgical techniques, comprehensive Patient Empowerment Program, and other resources.  Their support goes a long way toward helping the ASPS and The PSF increase women’s awareness of their breast reconstruction options.”

ASPS Member Surgeons and nyBRA physicians Randall S. Feingold, MD, Ron Israeli, MD, and Peter T. Korn, MD, have performed thousands of breast reconstructions and deliver state of the art surgery, provide emotional support through an innovative Patient Empowerment Program, and educate patients worldwide through their website BreastReconstruction.org

“It has long been our mission to educate and support women through the total healing process following mastectomy, which is why nyBRA was developed,” said Dr. Feingold, co-founder of nyBRA. “BRA Day USA provides us the perfect opportunity to enlighten breast cancer survivors about their reconstruction options and provide women everywhere with the information they need to make the best choices for their breasts, body, mind, and spirit,” concluded Dr. Israeli, co-founder of nyBRA.

Over the next two years singer/songwriter, New York Times bestselling author and humanitarian Jewel will serve as the national spokesperson, advocating on behalf of BRA Day USA through media appearances, public service announcements, a dedicated BRA Day USA song and benefit concert event. The nyBRA sponsorship provides important support for many of these awareness efforts.
