Holiday Madness Have You Frazzled? Dining, Entertainment, & Gift Ideas

Wendy L Thursday, December 22, 2011

Last minute shoppers, this is the last week you have before Christmas arrives this weekend. Hopefully you have thought about where you need to go and what you need to pick up, but if not, we are here to help.

This week, we highlight great places to complete last minute shopping and offer information on where to seek out holiday entertainment and dining in Long Island.

Here are this week’s highlights:

  • Shopping: If you can’t think of what to get, in most cases, you can never go wrong with a gift card to a department store, restaurant or coffee shop. If giving a gift card is not your style and you’re really looking to buy the right gift item, you’ll find tons of ideas just walking through one of the many malls in Long Island. Here are a few other highlights happening at some of Long Island’s malls:

    • The Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City is complete with a number of department stores, from Bloomingdale’s, JCPenney, Macy’s, to Nordstrom. While at Nordstrom, stop by the “Giving Tree.” Nordstrom has partnered with Shoes That Fit and New Balance to help children in the local community by offering new and proper fitting shoes. Each shopper who picks up a gift tag from the tree and brings it to the register to pay $20 will support this good cause. The “Giving Tree” will be up at Nordstrom’s thru Dec. 24.
    • At the Broadway Mall, located in Hicksville, don’t forget to “Give the Gift of Life” by giving blood. Take a break from your shopping and save a life. The Long Island Blood Services Blood Drive takes place on Dec. 28 and 29 from 11 am – 4:30 pm, across from Panera Bread.
    • A blood drive will also run at Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream. The Long Island Blood Services Blood Drive takes place on Dec. 31 from 10 am – 2:30 pm, and you can receive a pair of tickets to the Mets for giving blood.
    • Entertainment: For all Kenny Rogers and Billy Dean fans, we have a treat for you this holiday season. Head over to NYCB Theatre at Westbury to watch Kenny Rogers perform Christmas theme songs and his other great hits. His performance will be supported with acts from Billy Dean. A local choir and children will also be participating in the performance of holiday classics. The performance is available on Friday, Dec. 23 at 8 pm, and tickets are available for purchase online, ranging from $39.50 to $49.50.
    • Dining: Looking for a nice place for dinner on Christmas Eve? Look no further than Huntington, where it is home to HONU Kitchen & Cocktails. This upscale American restaurant and bar is complete with high ceilings, a fireplace, brick walls, and velvet booths for a chic vibe. It’s a mix between modern and vintage. Its menu consists of seafood and steak entrees that are sure to delight everyone’s appetite. On Christmas Eve, it will also feature a chilled seafood platter with blue point oysters, little neck clams, shrimp cocktail and poached calamari for $14 a person (2 person min.). Also featured will be filet mignon wellington, mushrooms duxelle wrapped in puff pastry, mashed potato and haricot verts for $39. Reservations are still accepted through OpenTable.

Happy holidays to all our readers!
