“Hayground Cemetery Tour, Windmill Lane & Montauk Highway”

Saturday June 2nd, 10am, Hayground, NY., with J. Kirk Flack, PhD

Join the Bridgehampton Historical Society’s volunteer docent, Dr. J. Kirkpatrick Flack, for a stroll through the Hay Ground cemetery on Saturday, June 2nd, at 10am. The tour is open to the public and free. Participants will gather at the intersection of Windmill Lane and Montauk Highway.

Last year Hay Ground was officially recognized by the Town of Southampton as a Heritage Area, with signs installed at each end of the community announcing it to travelers as they pass through. According to the town, “A Hamlet Heritage Resource Area is an honorary title bestowed in recognition of the special character of a neighborhood, hamlet or area.” Hay Ground was the fifth area to become a Heritage Area, along with Water Mill, Quiogue, Eastport, and Bridgehampton.

The Hay Ground area lies between, and partially overlaps, the hamlets of Bridgehampton and Water Mill. “Its name derives from being especially conducive for haying,” according to the Heritage Area report’s author, Kirk Flack. “There was quite a romantic side to this kind of work, although it was laborious,” according to an early twentieth century recollection. “Many young men welcomed haying as a time of physical challenge and competition. To be the best mower in a neighborhood, the one customarily chosen to lead ‘a gang of hands in hay’ across the field, was a distinction they eagerly sought.” Kirk is the natural choice to lead Hay Ground’s cemetery tour as a Hay Ground resident and the author of its Heritage Area report. Flack hails from the Washington, D. C. area, was an associate professor at the University of Maryland for many years in the subjects of U.S. History and historic preservation, and won much acclaim for his written works on D. C. area heritage resources.

In coordination with the society’s 2012 summer exhibits, the tour will highlight whaling captains from the area. Find out about them, about many other noted local families whose ancestors are buried in Hay Ground, and about the hamlet in general, during this tour in a park-like setting with Kirk Flack.

Rain cancels. Free admission.
