My daughter takes private clarinet lessons at the Stony Brook School of Music. She says that she likes it, for the most part, and that most of her teachers have been quite nice. The school seems to take a bit more of a laid-back approach--and I don't mean that in a bad way. She gets frustrated with band at school--as she points out, she loves playing music, but music is supposed to be fun, not stressful. You know how school band departments can get. She says a lot of the instruction she's received here while getting private lessons has been far better than the instruction she's received at school. I wouldn't be surprised if she drops school band and sticks with the private lessons. Hopefully she'll stay in band, but I'm glad to know she will still have an outlet if she doesn't.
