The Riverhead Animal Shelter is an agency that works with the government to investigate calls of neglect and cruelty.  They will remove animals from homes, pick up stray dogs and will also hold them and provide care for them until they can be adopted out. Veterinary services are also provided. Stray dogs are held for seven days and if they remain unclaimed, then they are made available for adoption to the public. They are open seven days a week for visits and to fill out applications to adopt dogs. Once the application is approved and the fee is paid the dogs can go home with the new owner.
