Leaders Gather for Discussion on Fair and Accessible Housing

Cait R Monday, October 12, 2015

Central Islip, NY - October 12th, 2015 - Touro Law Center and the Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP) are pleased to announce a full day conference, Planning & Zoning for Fair and Accessible Housing, on Friday, October 16, 2015 at Touro Law Center in Central Islip, NY.

“This conference was developed in response to recent changes in planning and zoning laws that will affect every community and allow advocates and community leaders to come together for an important discussion on how communities will be impacted,” said Dean Salkin. “The conference sponsors Touro Law and LIHP are pleased to have gathered experts in the area to share knowledge and answer questions to ensure everyone understands the liabilities of Fair Housing.”

With millions of federal dollars at stake and potential Fair Housing lawsuits looming, public officials, attorneys, planners, and advocates can learn how to incorporate Fair Housing obligations into planning and zoning decisions. Touro Law Center and the Long Island Housing Partnership are hosting this all day conference to help attendees understand their obligations to the Federal Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule.

The conference was designed to teach attendees how to create inclusive communities with access to opportunity, learn how the recent Supreme Court decision on disparate impact discrimination affects land use policies on Long Island, avoid fair housing claims based on disparate impact and understand the new Assessment of Fair Housing planning process and its relationship to consolidated plans.

CLE credits are available. The conference is sponsored by the Land Use & Sustainable Development Law Institute at Touro Law, the Aging & Longevity Law Institute at Touro Law and the American Planning Association New York Metro Chapter.
